Built in 1870, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse was the highest brick lighthouse tower in the world. The Cape Hatteras Light with its distinctive “candy cane” design, marked very dangerous shoals which extend from the cape for a distance of 10 nautical miles. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the ultimate symbol of lighthouses…It is huge, majestic, and guards the “graveyard of the Atlantic.” It watches over the infamous Diamond Shoals, a major turning point on the east coast for coastal trade. It is open to the public in the spring, summer, and fall.
