Split Rock
Lighthouse, Two Harbors, Minnesota
Completed in 1910, Split Rock Lighthouse is located between Two Harbors and Beaver Bay on the upper edge of a 127’ cliff. Due to the magnetic interference with the ship’s compass, caused by the huge amount of iron in the rocks, many ships wrecked in this area. In November of 1905, 29 ships were lost or damaged due to storms and inaccurate compass readings. In addition to this the water is so deep close to shore that it is difficult to sound for depth at a safe distance from shore. Influential steel manufactures demanded a lighthouse at Split Rock and…. they got it. Split Rock Lighthouse is no longer active.
